Run in 2012, this program installed nearly 20 small front yard gardens on Ashley Street -- so small that they didn't even qualify as pocket gardens, hence "vest pocket gardens." The idea was to design gardens that fit the Hartford environment -- Asylum Hill in particular is notorious for its clay soil -- and would fit the lifestyle of the typical homeowner here. In other words, small and easy to maintain around a busy work day schedule!
Of course, the best laid plans always go awry. The landscape designers who volunteered their time, effort, and materials expanded the program into a garden competition, and the result was a beautiful streetscape that quickly became the envy of Hartford.
We haven't had funding for this program since, but we're always on the lookout for opportunities to install more front yard gardens. If you're interested, let us know!
