The addition was open in order that we could clean out the basement under the original section of the house - right now, the only access to the basement is through the addition - and the addition also provides the only access to the second floor of the original section of the house.
In a couple of the shots of the second floor in the original section of the house, you can see two plywood boards on the floor. Those cover up the hole that was originally the opening for the main staircase in the house. You can also see original windows that were preserved but concealed by the addition.
