102 Huntington Street, past and present

I spent the day with Jonathan Clark today.  We were creating new videos for his walking tour, which I’ll hope to edit and post before the end of the year.  Jonathan has been a longstanding tour guide for NINA, starting back before COVID, when we used to do these tours in person.

The front porch is being framed.  No work yet on the back deck, but photos are included for the perspective on the back door and the former basement door.

It was just a day to dig holes for footings!  Note, too, that the staircase to the basement door has been filled in.

Work is still underway on framing at 102 Huntington, and now the rough electric is, too.  There wasn’t much new in the way of things to see in the house until I came across this view.  It looks down from the third floor into the bedroom on the southwest corner of the house.

This was unexpected!  The driveway has become overgrown, but again, I think it looks nice!

An unfortunate incident at 102 Huntington

Someone tried to break in last night.  They didn’t get in, but the damage to the window is substantial.

We had two volunteers via The Hartford today, and they put in some work re-creating the pathway around the garden.

The front door is back!

The door has been gone for almost two months, but here it is, nearly back at home!  It will be a little while before it goes back to 102.

The exterior door to the basement, which was under the deck, has also been removed and bricked up.  Actually, “cinder blocked up.”  The cinder blocks beneath the deck were original – maybe?  They predate NINA, and it seems a good guess that they were installed the sun room was added to the house in the 1940s.

We had formed a partnership with Our Piece of the Pie to maintain the garden this summer, as OPP has a workforce development program in landscaping, but unfortunately OPP became overwhelmed by helping students who had been signed up to work this summer through Blue Hills Civic Association.  I think, however, that the garden looks quite nice, overgrown as it is.

We made the decision to take out the exterior doors to the basement.  That entailed taking out a section of the back deck, so that we could get to it.  Also, work on the rear exterior.

Connecticut Natural Gas had a crew there today, installing a new gas line.  This is part of getting a new gas meter that will now be on the exterior of the house.

The old paint has been stripped off, and the door knob and locks have been removed.

Since I was over there, I also took some shots of the now missing door, which has gone to a shop to be restored.  If you look closely, midway on the frame to the right of the door, you can see where the state historic plaque was.

Part of a rotating crew who tended the garden at 102 Huntington Street throughout the summer.  This was part of an experiment in volunteering at NINA:  it was a long-term gig, and they set their own schedule, coming and going as they could be there.  It worked well enough that we think we’ll do this again next summer.

Cleaning out more of 102 Huntington with the defensive lines of the Trinity College men’s hockey team.  Most of the work was on the third floor.  After things were brought down, they were loaded into the back of Ramon’s truck and taken over to the dumpster at 847 Asylum Avenue.

We had a group from The Hartford come in today to help with moving some of the stuff out of the house at 102 Huntington Street.

The azaleas were spectacular next door to 102 at the Clark Meadow, as we are currently calling it, after Jonathan Clark, who planted it and tended it for the past four decades.  It also helps us to know where things are as the garden moves through the spring and summer.
